The Isle of Wight Foot Beagles with huntsman
Jason Bellamy, whipper-in Mark Ruttledge and the huntsman's family.
Samber Hill, near Chale, 9th November 2002
The
Isle of Wight Beagles hunt each Saturday of the Winter months with the
occasional bye-day. The country takes in the whole of the Isle of
Wight which consists of a chalk down-land spine from East to West with
flatter, sandy land by the South-West coast. Much of the higher
ground is covered in beach woods. The Eastern half is fairly
built-up while the Western half remains largely unspoilt by the modern
age. There are no dual-carriageways and the one single track railway
does not interfere with the hunting.
The uniform (only worn by the Master and
hunt staff) is green beagling coat, white breeches, green socks and green
fore and aft hat.
The Isle of Wight Foot Beagles were
originally formed in 1906 by Mr Young. They were disbanded during the
Great War, not restarting until 1924 when Lt. Col. FJT Mew and his sister
took over. They were again disbanded in 1940 and re-formed in 1959.
